Fixing InsiderUpdates Crashes |
|
If InsiderUpdates crashes and you have a lot of files, you can usually fix the problem by increasing the amount of memory allocated to InsiderUpdates. If you selected to automatically decompress new updaters and some files are not decompressed, then you should increase the amount of memory, also. To increase the amount of memory, click on the InsiderUpdates
icon in the Finder, select 'Get Info' from the 'File' menu, and
enter a bigger number in the 'Preferred Size' text box. |
|
What's Not updated |
|
The InsiderUpdates software scans and updates the files on your locally attached hard disk(s). To update applications on your CD-ROMs or other removable media, either mount the volume before running InsiderUpdates or copy the application(s) to your hard drive. The InsiderUpdates software doesn't update the software on networked Macs, only the one it's running on. Apple Computer's Macintosh Programming Guidelines requires each program on the Macintosh to have a unique Type and Creator code. The Type code defines the type of program - Application, Control Panel, or Extension, among others. The Creator code links applications with its documents. InsiderUpdates uses this information to help uniquely identify a program. However, some programs have the same Type and Creator codes as other programs. For these programs with non-unique Type and Creator codes, InsiderUpdates analyzes the file's name to match an updater. If you change the program's file name, you may not receive these updaters. InsiderUpdates only updates the latest installed version of a program on a particular drive. For example, if you have MyApp 2.0 and MyApp 3.0 on the same drive, you won't receive any updaters for MyApp 2.0. However, if you want to update MyApp 2.0, you can move it to a separate drive. If you receive an updater that is not applicable to your software,
please contact Insider Software with the updater's name and we will determine
the cause. |
|
Why don't I get updaters immediately? |
|
You may occassionally come accross an updater that you didn't receive. This is because the InsiderUpdates staff needs to obtain precise Type and Creator code and version number information. This can involve contacting the developer who may be tardy in providing the information. Whever possible, we install and test new updaters before making
them available. If we determine that the updater may cause negative
behavior, we may withhold it until the developer releases a new
update. |
|
Why are version numbers different? |
|
You may notice that the stuffed file delivered by InsiderUpdates
indicates a different version number than the file name of the
updater. Each program on the Macintosh should have a 'version'
resource. These are stored as both internal numbers and the version
information that's displayed in the Finder's Get Info window.
InsiderUpdates uses the internal version number so if the developer
has not synchronized the two version formats, then the file name
will be different. If the developer failed to provide a version
resource, then InsiderUpdates does not use the updater. |
|
Protect your download history |
|
The Downloads file is kept in the InsiderUpdates Preferences folder
inside your Preferences folder. If this file is not present, InsiderUpdates
will attempt to download every applicable updater again. Please
be sure to move the InsiderUpdates Preferences folder to the proper
location if you install a 'clean' System folder. You should also
back up the file for added protection. |
|
How often should I run InsiderUpdates? |
|
We recommend that you run the program once a week. This is often
enough to keep you updated without being so frequent that the
updaters become disruptive. You will also get the best transmission
speed if you schedule the session between 2:30 am and 5:30 am
because these are the least busy times on the Internet. |
|
Security |
|
InsiderUpdates automatically generates a unique UserID and Password
for logging into InsiderUpdates servers. This is the only information
that is ever sent from your computer. For your protection and
privacy, InsiderUpdates does not transmit any information about
your hardware or software. |
|
Virus Protection |
|
Every updater is checked by Insider Software before it is made
available for distribution. We use both Symantec AntiVirus for
Macintosh (SAM) and DataWatch's Virex using the most current virus
definitions. |
